‍Compost material is free for Berne residents’ personal landscaping needs. You may shovel load available compost material anytime the compost site is open.

No personal loading equipment is allowed.

 

 

If you are needing a larger quantity of compost material, a City of Berne employee can assist you.

 

Assisted Loading Hours

​Tuesday 4pm - 6pm and Saturday 7am - 3pm.

from Apr. 7th -Oct. 3rd

​No assisted loading from Oct. 5th, 2026 - Apr. 3, 2027.

2026 PICKUP SCHEDULE

The following dates are when we plan to pick up your compost items as well as our route schedule so you can see which day of the week you land on.

You may also bring the above materials to our compost site at the Wastewater Treatment Plant northeast of Berne on Rd 550S. (¼ mile E of 000 ) during the hours noted.  Follow the signs at the site.

Limbs & Branches Pickup

‍Every Friday– April - November.

As needed December - March.

 

Place items near the curb.

*Tree trimming businesses and individuals who are hired to cut down trees are responsible for the removal of all limbs, branches

and other debris.

City Wide Grass /Leaf /Garden Vegetation Pickup

‍Every Thursday April 2nd - Oct. 1st 

 

Place grass in a proper

open container near the curb.

​

*Please do not blow grass onto city streets.  Grass on streets creates a safety hazard and clogs storm drains.

Fall Leaf Vac Schedule  for Grass /Leaf /Garden Vegetation

‍From October 5th – December 3rd

 

Place grass and leaves on the pavement for vacuum pickup.

CITY OF BERNE

RECYCLING & LANDFILL

At this time, the City of Berne does not offer curbside recycling. However, there are a number of options available for those wishing to do so.  
 

Berne’s Recycle Center is Operated by

Adams County Solid Waste

7315 S US Highway 27 at Simon Mfg. (Unit Step) Use the lane on the north side and follow directions.

Open on Mondays from 9 AM-5 PM
(The center is closed any Monday that is a legal holiday, but will be open on Tuesday of that week)

Citizens of Berne are encouraged to recycle cans, plastics, newspapers and cardboard by using the recycle location. If you have any questions about using this service, please call the Adams County transfer station:

E-Waste In 2019, the blue box for e-waste located at the  Jefferson Street city garage was removed by the owner due to repeated abuse of the e-waste policy.
